HOUSTON – AT&T Inc. is planning to hire 1,800 people throughout Texas, and about 281 of those will be in the Houston area.

The bulk of the jobs — about 770 — will be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, about 300 will be in Austin, and another 120 will be in San Antonio.

The Dallas-based telecommunications company said it is seeking U-verse technicians, call center workers and retail employees. AT&T plans to fill the positions immediately.

In May 2013, AT&T chose Houston as one of three initial launch sites for its new prepaid wireless subsidiary, Aio Wireless. The company is opening 20 stores throughout Houston and giving away $30,000 worth of scholarships to Houston area students as part of the launch.

Earlier this year, AT&T said it invested more than $7 billion in Texas wireless and wireline networks from 2010 through 2012. The company currently employs more than 35,000 people in Texas.
