THE COLONY - The Little Elm ISD board of school trustees gave the district the green light to begin construction in August 2013 on the STEM Academy. Construction will begin in August.

The two-story, 80,000-sf school will be built on a 31-acre plot in The Tribute, a master-planned community in The Colony located in the south side of the school district. The Tribute has agreed to pay $5 million for a four-year period to offset operational costs.

The school will have 720 students attend when the school opens for the 2014-2015 school year. The 400 elementary grade students will be on the lower floor, while the 320 junior high grade students will be on the upper floor.

Although the STEM Academy is the first in the district, 54 other STEM schools exist in Texas alone, 13 of which are located in the Dallas area. However, Little Elm’s STEM Academy is the first to house students from kindergarten through eighth grade — most serve junior high and high school students only.
