PORT ARTHUR - The Port Arthur Economic Development Corporation can now assist with funding of a new dorm on the campus of Lamar State College-Port Arthur.
The new dorm, estimated at $5 million, will provide 100 beds. It will sit on Lakeshore Dr. near the seawall and will house mainly athletes and commuters looking to save money on travel expenses.
Housing plans have been in the works for years. With new sports programs, the school previously turned to commercial housing for it's athletes.
"Getting the players back and forth from the campus to the lodging site has always provided a logistical difficulty for us," says school President Sam Monroe.
"What's done on campus will impact what's done downtown," says Monroe.
Monroe hopes to see a ripple effect: new housing, more students and then new businesses.
New Texas legislation states that the new dorm has to be built by 2017 in order to receive Economic Development Corporation funding.
