McALLEN - When football players run out on Veterans Memorial Stadium for their first game Aug. 28, their cleats will touch new turf.
Located at 2001 N. Bicentennial Blvd. It is one of several new modifications — at $5 million — in sight for the stadium that originally opened in 1976.
Renovations include air conditioning for the restrooms and concession stands underneath the bleachers, ramps and new fencing, said Kevin Hitchcock, McAllen school district’s facilities director.
Despite a few rain delays, city and school district officials expect all the renovations to be complete by the end of the summer and to be able to use the field sooner.
The city pitched in $3 million, and the school district covered the rest.
