SAN ANTONIO - General contractors in the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan area added 3,300 employees to their payrolls between May 2012 and May 2013, according to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

As of May 31, 2012, local contractors reported 40,500 employees. A year later, the employment count stood at 43,800 — an increase of 8 percent.

Two Texas metros lost jobs between May 2012 and 2013 — the Beaumont-Port Arthur area, which shed 1,200 jobs; and Victoria, which lost 200 jobs over the 12 months ended May 31, 2013. Employment numbers were unchanged in the Wichita Falls metro.

As was the case in April, the Dallas-Plano-Irving metro area added 9,700 jobs between May 2012 and 2013, the most in Texas.

In second was the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metro, which added 8,900 jobs over the 12-month period.

Following close behind in third was the Fort Worth-Arlington metro, which added 8,800 jobs between May 2012 and 2013.

After those three came San Antonio — with its 3,300 new employees.

AGC reports that out of 339 metropolitan areas, employment increased in 185 areas, declined in 115 and was stagnant in 39 metros.

Officials say they are encouraged by the number of metros adding jobs, and the pace at which employment numbers are climbing in those areas.
