CANUTILLO ISDĀ - Construction for a $27 million school named after former U.S. Congressman Silvestre Reyes and his wife Carolina Reyes will begin today. Canutillo Independent School District officials hosted the groundbreaking ceremony at 7440 Northern Pass.

The 146,650-sf combination school will house administrative offices for both the elementary and middle school staffs, a nurse's office, one library and two separate gymnasiums for students attending all grade levels.

Construction of the school is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

District officials said growth in the area surrounding the Canutillo district led to the construction of the campus. Once it is complete, the school will serve as many as 600 students in grades prekindergarten through eighth.

More than 1,500 students are anticipated to enroll at the district over the next four years, creating the need for additional classrooms and possibly another high school. About 6,000 students are currently served at the district's four elementary schools, two middle schools, a combination school, and one high school campus and at the district's Northwest Early College High School.
