AUSTIN - Central Texas Veterans Health Care System veterans have a new 184,000-sf Austin VA Outpatient Clinic open at 7901 Metropolis Drive.

"It is the largest free-standing leased clinic of its type in the nation, approximately three times larger than the current Montopolis Clinic,” said William F. Harper, interim director for Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.

The Southeast Austin clinic serves about 23,000 veterans each year, and officials project that number will grow to 30,000 patients by 2025.

For years, veterans had to travel more than 70 miles north to the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center in Temple for those services and others, said Deborah Meyer for the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.

The clinic on Metropolis Drive in Southeast Austin has a 20-year lease for the site.

The former clinic on Montopolis Dr. was bought by Central Health for $8 million. Central Health planned to renovate the clinic and open it as one of the system’s more than 20 CommUnityCare clinics.
