KILLEEN - Camber Corp.'s recent decision to lay off 255 Killeen employees followed the military's move to end a firearms-repair contract with the company.

The company will eliminate its Small Arms Readiness Evaluation Team by the end of the year, said Walt Sasser, vice president of communications at Camber Corp. The company's other operations in Texas shouldn't be affected.

The layoffs will be divided into two phases: 161 employees will lose their jobs in July and another 94 at the end of Sept.

"When you lose the contract you can't sustain the employees," Sasser said. "We're really disappointed...this is a big hit for us and for those folks, especially when you look at how they've performed."
