BROWNSVILLE - New real estate transactions have Texas Southmost College (TSC) and the University of Texas System school only being roughly divided by Ringgold Rd., with UT Brownsville (UTB) sitting on the southeast side and TSC remaining northwest of it.

TSC will retain the Science, Engineering and Technology Building and the 3.8 acres it is located on, while UTB will keep the University Boulevard classroom and library buildings. However, each school will allow the other some use of its buildings.

TSC students will be allowed to use the University Boulevard Library with no cost to the school through August 2016. After that, there will be a marginal cost for library use through 2021.

Leases approved will give TSC access to labs it uses in the Life and Health Sciences Building through August 2018. UTB students will still have access to the chemistry and physics labs in the Science, Engineering and Technology Building, according to TSC President Lily Tercero.

TSC will keep the Recreation, Education and Kinesiology Center, but UTB students will still have access to the center. UT will continue to pay its share of the bond debt associated with the REK Center.

TSC is set to receive approximately $28.5 million from the land deal.

“It’s a momentous step for both entities,” Tercero said. “It allows now both entities to have the opportunity to have a defined campus and fully autonomous independent institutions.”
