CORPUS CHRISTI - The iconic Lichtenstein building in downtown will make way for a five-story mixed-use apartment complex modeled after the building’s signature curved facade at the corner of Chaparral and Lawrence streets.

The Cosmopolitan — a $29 million project planned at the center of two blocks of public improvement in downtown — will take its place.

Plans to begin razing the Lichtenstein are set for mid-September, said John Schleider, vice president of development for Realtex Development Corp.

In its place will be 165 apartments with 3,800 sf of ground-floor retail space. Construction to build the foundation of The Cosmopolitan could begin as early as Nov. 1 with the apartments beginning to take shape about Feb. 1.

There will be one-bedroom, one-bath and two-bedroom, two-bath apartments. Lease prices will range from $1,100 a month to $1,800 a month. Preleasing will begin next summer.
