Fire Dept. streamlines logistics in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department has opened a new $6.37 million, 56,000-sf Services and Logistics Facility at 230 S. Callahan Rd. The building, once operational, will be used to repair and maintain equipment and store fire and EMS supplies.
The structure includes 16,000 sf of storage space for fire and EMS supplies, according to the Fire Department and the city’s Capital Improvements Management Services. Additionally, there is a covered, outdoor repair area has a capacity of 12 vehicles.
Besides fire trucks and EMS vehicles, workers also will be able to fix self-contained breathing apparatus, thermal-imaging cameras and gas detection monitors at the facility.
“This is going to allow us to work on more vehicles more efficiently, give us more space, hopefully get these vehicles out back in the field quicker, and also to supply the logistics, which are the supplies,” said Fire Chief Charles Hood.
The facility’s proximity to highways like Texas 151 and I-35 will help crews easily get around the city, improve services for residents and potentially attract more businesses and development, according to Mayor Pro Tem Ray Lopez.
