BROWNSVILLE - A new 600-foot dock at the Port of Brownsville will commence construction in September 2013. Florida-based Shoreline Foundation Inc. will construct the project, dubbed Dock 16, which is estimated to cost $26.2 million, with the federal government contributing $12 million.

The new dock will allow the port to substantially increase its cargo-handling capacity and ease delays for vessels, according to Eddie Campirano, port director and CEO.

It will be built as a general-purpose dock to handle steel, scrap and virtually every other type of heavy cargo, and will give the port more flexibility in handling cargo containers. Dock 16 will be the port’s second heavy-load capacity dock.

Completion is scheduled for March 2015.
