Downtown Garland, Firewheel turns mixed-use growth
GARLAND – Construction began on 158 residential units downtown in a partnership between the City of Garland and Oaks Properties LLC. In 2008, the partnership led to the construction of 188 units at Oaks Fifth St. Crossing, located at 351 North 5th St.
The new mixed-use development will take advantage of transit-oriented development opportunities along Garland’s DART rail station.
The 158-unit addition is a $15 million investment by Oaks Properties on top of an already $17 million in downtown’s Oaks Fifth St. Crossing. The project will require 18 to 24 months for construction.
The city will prepare the site for development and will construct a parking structure with a minimum of 330 spaces to serve the public, residential tenants and those accessing City Hall.
A few miles down the road from City Hall, residency will soon be doubled at Firewheel Town Center.
Columbus Realty Partners will build next to the existing 312 apartment and townhouse rentals that opened in July 2007.
The complex, called Parkside at Firewheel, has 1 million sf of retail, restaurant and entertainment space.
