WICHITA FALLS - As the first phase of construction of the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport nears completion, work on phase two will soon begin. The second phase will include the new 50,000-sf terminal building, totaling $25 million.

The terminal will feature an aviation history museum, a USO, meditation room, ticket counter for two airlines, a VIP lounge and conference room. Sheppard Air Force Base and the airport share the airfield and runways.

Construction of the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport will be completed in three phases. All three phases will cost more than $35 million.

Phase three of the project will include a new apron for aircraft, with construction beginning in February or March to be ready before the new airport opens.

The original terminal was constructed in 1959 by Sheppard Air Force Base. Remodeling projects followed in 1968, 1973, 1979, 1983, 1986, and, most recently, in 2006. The airport has 17,500 sf of interior space.

The airport is expected to be open to passengers October 2014.
