AUSTIN - The City of Austin rents 156,568 sf of office space at an annual cost of more than $3.1 million, according to city documents. The largest space rented by the city is the Austin Housing Authority Building at 1124 S. I-35. The 37,857 sf rents for $737,723 annually.

The second largest property is the Austin Police Department's building at 4101 S. Industrial Dr. That property's 27,520 sf is rented at an annual cost of $186,288 per year.

Over the past decade, the city has added 1,319 jobs and has struggled to keep pace with the expansion in some departments. Space will become even tighter.

To head off some of the problems, City Hall is planning a renovation. In June, City Council also approved a lease for an extra 27,971 sf at the downtown Silicon Laboratories Inc. building.
