VICTORIA - Underclassmen lead the growth of University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) students living in Victoria this fall.

UHV reported having slightly more than 1,200 students in Victoria this year, according to state-reported enrollment numbers. In 2009, before the university started offering classes to freshmen and sophomores, UHV had 451 students in Victoria.

"We have nearly tripled our student head count in Victoria, mainly by adding freshmen and sophomores," UHV President Phil Castille writes.

Total enrollment is at 4,516, up by 4.2 percent from last fall. It includes students taking courses at UHV's teaching centers in Sugar Land, Katy and The Woodlands.

Final fall enrollment figures and a breakdown of demographics will be released later this fall.
