Dallas - Dallas businesses exported $54.2 billion in goods and services last year, fifth-best among the nation’s metropolitan areas, according to the Global Cities Initiative.

The Initiative’s estimate of Dallas exports of goods was $9.7 billion higher than last year’s Census Bureau estimates. Houston ranked third with $77.8 billion in exports, followed by Los Angeles and Chicago.

The Global Cities Initiative, sponsored by the Brookings Institution and J.P. Morgan Chase, goes beyond the Census Bureau’s numbers on exports from the nation’s metro areas, which track origin of movement rather than origin production. The Initiative also includes exports of services, which the Census Bureau does not track at the metro level.
