HOUSTON - Houston Baptist University’s (HBU) 2013-2014 freshman enrollment of 568 students is a new school record.

The university this year also has set a record for total enrollment, with a combined 2,910 undergraduate and graduate students. That breaks the old mark of a combined enrollment of 2,829, set in 2001.

HBU's graduate students are making up a large segment of the school's growth. This year's graduate enrollment of 739 students is up 38 percent from last year and is the school's third-highest total ever. HBU has 15 graduate programs.

James Steen, HBU's vice president for enrollment management, noted that the increases validate a study the school commissioned in 2011 that concluded enrollment would increase with the introduction of a football program — which started its inaugural season in August.

Construction is underway for HBU's on-campus football stadium — Dunham Field, near the corner of Beechnut and Fondren — set to be completed by the start of next season.
