BROWNSVILLE - The University of Texas at Brownsville has a total enrollment of 8,420 students for fall 2013 semester.

That number climbed to 8,601 when counting students in the Brownsville Early College High School and the Math and Science Academy, said Nikkie Hodgson, executive director for Enrollment Services.

The number of students exceeded estimates of what the university projected before its separation from Texas Southmost College. University officials estimated enrollment would be 7,500.

Undergraduate students are enrolled for 80,216 semester credit hours, and more than 5,700 students receive a combined total of $62 million in financial aid, according to the university.

Despite the unexpected surge in enrollment, Hodgson said that UTB has been able to accommodate all students, and she expects enrollment to keep climbing as the university begins to re-establish itself as a separate entity.
