EL PASO - El Paso’s unemployment rate in August 2013 decreased slightly from July to 8.6 percent, but continued to be well above state and national rates, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reported.

The local unemployment rate was 8.7 percent in July and 9.2 percent in August 2012. The national rate was 7.3 percent in August, and the statewide rate was 6.4 percent.

An estimated 28,100 El Pasoans were unemployed and actively seeking work in August, the Texas Workforce Commission reported.

El Paso added an estimated 800 jobs in August, with half of those in manufacturing. However, the manufacturing industry lost jobs over the last 12 months.

El Paso added about 1,600 jobs since August 2012 for an annual gain of 0.6 percent — below the statewide annual gain of 2.5 percent. El Paso Hotels and restaurants added about 1,400 jobs in the last 12 months, the largest local jobs generator.
