MCKINNEY - McKinney City Council approved a request from Collin College that will allow the college to build a new public safety training facility on 25 acres of city-owned land.
The facility — on the east side of US 75 near Bloomdale Rd. and Redbud Blvd. — will feature an indoor virtual firearms training center; two outdoor fire training structures, including a burn tower with at least four stories; and classrooms and other assorted amenities.
Construction on the facility is expected to cost roughly $13 million. More than $11 million will be funded by Collin College, and the City of McKinney has committed $2.2 million.
The McKinney Fire Department will also benefit from the new facility as it receives the first scheduling opportunity following Collin College. The facility is also open to other area agencies.
The city will be responsible for developing the roadway infrastructure to the site.
