Crews keep quick pace on new Walker County Jail
HUNTSVILLE, WALKER COUNTY – Construction on the new 70,000-sf Walker County Jail continues to stay ahead of schedule, and it could be housing inmates sooner than anticipated. The $19 million facility, located on FM 2821 Rd. West, could be up and running before the projected completion date in March 2014.
Captain Steve Fisher, the jail administrator, said the company in charge of construction, Sedalco, is constantly updating its projections.
Once the building is finished, officials would begin testing everything to make sure it was working properly.
The roof of the facility is almost complete; furniture is being moved in and bolted down and security glass has been installed in the jail. In October, the control center, which will operate the new jail, will be put together.
The county will have to hire seven additional jailers to meet requirements by the Commission of Jail Standards before inmates can be brought into the new facility in 2014.
