SAN ANTONIO – The planned extension of Southwest 36th Street has been complete, opening up about 400 acres of runway-accessible lease space to the aerospace industry. The approximately $40 million project is a four-lane, 1.7-mile road that links US 90 to Billy Mitchell Blvd.

Three years ago, city and port officials originally anticipated the roadway extension would only open up 150 acres for new development. Now that the project is completed, it is possible that 400 acres could be developed.

At full use, the property could accommodate up to 8,000 more workers. The port’s key aerospace customers, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, StandardAero and Chromalloy, take up the available space on the port’s southern end.

Port San Antonio’s aerospace customers collectively employ about 4,000 people. There are about 80 tenants overall at the port with an employment base of 13,000 workers.
