PALMVIEW, HIDALGO COUNTY - Some $31.5 million in Texas Water Development Board financing will help residents get their first wastewater treatment system.

The Agua Special Utility District received approval for the funding to construct a system to provide wastewater treatment to 3,000 residents in the city.

Out of the total $31.5 million awarded, $1.8 million is a loan, $365,000 is loan forgiveness from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and $29.3 million is a grant from the Economically Distressed Areas Program.

The utility district will also receive an additional $8 million grant from the North American Development bank to include toward the project.

Currently, Palmview residents have septic systems, which are small scale sewage systems with no connection to main pipelines.

The money is expected to become available in March 2014 and construction for the project will begin during the summer 2014, according to Francisco Flores, Agua SUD district manager. The entire project is expected to be completed by early 2016.
