AMARILLO - Three quarters into 2013, roofing permits accounted for 43 percent of the $350.5 million in construction projects the city has approved.

By September 2013, 13,919 roofing permits worth $153.3 million had been issued, compared to 750 permits worth $6.9 million that were issued in the first three quarters 2012.

More than 13,350 houses have been involved in repair or replacement amounting to $130.6 million of the total. Residential roof permit activity appears to have leveled off from the post-storm spike, but still is steady, according to Scott McDonald, a City of Amarillo building official.

Crews launched construction of 370 single-family homes worth a combined $95.7 million during the first three quarters 2013, compared to 384 homes worth $95.4 million during the same period 2012.

A shortage of house lots ready for construction played into the fewer starts in 2013, but that situation is beginning to ease, said Lew Bradshaw Texas Panhandle Builders Association Executive Officer.

Several neighborhoods have opened new streets and prepared lots with utilities, including The Greenways, The Colonies, Hillside Terrace and The Vineyards.

Builders have stepped up townhome construction, obtaining permits for 68 projects worth $11 million through September 2013. In the same period 2012, the city issued 41 townhome permits valued at $7.7 million.

Overall, through September 2013, the city issued 16,069 permits for $350.5 million in construction, compared with 2,247 permits for $254.4 million during the same period 2012.
