HOUSTON - Houston's grocery market is a competitive one. The Kroger Co. is expected to open four stores in the Houston area within the next year.

A new Kroger Marketplace is slated to open in Kingwood October 26 at 25651 Hwy. 59 N. The 124,000-sf store will offer furniture, home and kitchen items, children’s essentials, jewelry and an 18-pump fuel center.

Yet another Kroger Marketplace is under construction in the Towne Lake master-planned community in Northwest Houston.

Earlier this year, Sprouts Farmers Market opened its first Houston-area store at 23105 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy.

Its Spring Cypress location, at 22506 Hwy. 249, opened in April 2013. Its third location, at 7055 Hwy. 6 North in Copperfield Village shopping center, opened in July 2013.

Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Fresh Market Inc. and Aldi Inc. also have recently entered the Houston market.

The area's top three grocers based on Houston market share are The Kroger Co., Walmart Stores Inc., and HEB Grocery Company LLC.
