EL PASO – The El Paso Chihuahuas will be the Class AAA Pacific Coast League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The team name was chosen primarily to represent El Paso’s spirit and fiercely-loyal community, and recognize the region’s location in the Chihuahuan Desert.

With his spiked collar, El Paso Chihuahuas merchandise was flying off the shelves, and the team’s GM say they could not keep up with Internet orders.

Chihuahuas? They are indigenous, and there could well be more of those little dogs per El Paso household than anywhere else.

Chihuahuas did well in a market study, particularly among children, who are a big target of Minor League Baseball’s efforts to make games fun.

Construction of the El Paso ballpark is moving steadily. The arched walkway on the concourse level is taking shape, and steel columns are beginning to rise.

"The project is beginning to go vertical. It’s a really exciting time during the project," said Alan Shubert, Project Engineer. The city plans to have the stadium ready when the 2014 Triple-A baseball season begins.
