HOUSTON - Houston is the best city in the U.S. for veterans to find a job, according to USAA and Hiring our Heroes shows.
The study, performed by Sperling's Best Places, gave the Bayou City its top spot because of its "affordability, … vibrant economy, and the jobs and industries that best fit the skills of today's transitioning military members."
Houston also earned kudos for its below-average unemployment rate of 6.1 percent; its 2.6 percent job growth over the last year, which is among the top 10 percent of all metro areas; its below-average median housing price of $149,500; and for having the "amenities and resources that come with being the fourth-largest metro area in the U.S."
Dallas and Austin also made the top ten, at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.
The USAA honor is the latest in a slew of accolades for Houston in 2013, including:
• Forbes magazine deeming it 'America's next great global city';
• Recognition on CNN Money's list of best places to live in the U.S.;
• A top-three ranking for most new construction activity; and
• Ranking second on Forbes' list of 'Best Cities for Good Jobs'.
