LOS FRESNOS - The Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District has approved plans to build a $2.4 million, 20,000-sf community shelter in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The community safe room, or FEMA dome, will double as a competition gymnasium for the Los Fresnos United (LFU) Ninth Grade campus as the school continues to grow.

The 1,600-seat gymnasium and multi-purpose center for LFU campus will also serve as a safe room for residents during county declared emergencies.

The structure is connected with the Texas Safe Shelter Initiative and required approval by FEMA. The federal government will pay 75 percent, or $1.8 million, and the school district will pay $600,000.

“The FEMA dome will be able to withstand heavy weather like hurricanes. Inside it will look like a regular gym, with a basketball court and retractable bleachers,” said Ronnie Zamora, coordinator for the Communications and Marketing Office.
