QUINTANA ISLAND, BRAZORIA COUNTY - The U.S. Department of Energy has given Freeport LNG Expansion LP the authority to export more liquefied natural gas from its three-train LNG export facility, which will be in service by 2014.

In May 2013, Houston-based Freeport LNG was the second company in the United States to gain approval to export LNG to countries that don’t have a free trade agreement. At the time, Freeport was allowed to export 1.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day.

As of November 2013, if Freeport’s facility passes an environmental review and gets final regulatory approval, it has the authority to export up to 1.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day for 20 years.

As of September 2013, four companies had received conditional approval to export LNG to non-free trade agreement countries.
