EL PASO - Quality Fruit and Vegetable Co., one of El Paso’s largest produce distributors, has won a contract worth up to $30 million from the U.S. Defense Department. This number represents 10 percent, maybe 15 percent, of the company's annual sales currently, according to owner Nick Delgado.

Delgado’s five-year contract is to supply produce to soldiers at Fort Bliss and local school districts through a federal nutrition program that provides fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to schools.

Military contracts have become more precious as contracting activity has slackened at Fort Bliss now that the nearly $5 billion expansion of the Army post has mostly ended and the military has turned to budget cutting nationwide.

The Defense Logistics Agency awarded or modified 763 contracts, totaling $266 million, for businesses in El Paso County in fiscal 2013, the period from October 2012 to September 2013.
