Edinburg annexes over 2,000 acres
EDINBURG – The Edinburg City Council has voted to annex 17 unincorporated areas covering over 2,000 acres. The move will provide city services like police coverage, street maintenance and drainage systems to about 3,000 people on all sides of the city.
Four of the annexed areas are on the city’s southern border, five are on the west, four border the north and three are on the eastern edge.
Adding the existing properties will bring in an estimated $700,000 annually in property tax revenue, and vacant land will allow the city flexibility as it continues aggressively planning commercial expansions.
The city’s planning department estimated the annexations would require about $6.2 million in capital investments in streets, sewage and utilities. Property taxes for the newly annexed land will increase 63.5 cents per $100 of property value.
