ODESSA – Since the boom started, people in the area in and around Odessa began consuming another 800,000 cases of beer, according to the CEO Lanny Layman of Standard Sales.

Now the company has broken ground on an estimated $20 million, 150,000-sf distribution center at the corner of JBS Pkwy. and Pearl St. The facility is expected open in 2014.

The project is being built on land owned by the Odessa Industrial Development Corporation. A $1 million grant spread equally over five years has been awarded as an incentive, according to Guy Andrews of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce.

About 4 million cases of beer are expected to make their way to retailers through the new center every year — about a fourth of the company’s sales, which include operations in Colorado and Mississippi.

Standard sales began operations in 1952 and primarily distributes Budweiser products.
