SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Casandra Matej says the decision to expand and improve the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center is already paying dividends for the city.

Crews recently began work on the $325 million expansion of and improvements to Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. That transformation won’t be completed until summer 2016, but the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau is already booking significant business on the promise of new downtown facilities.

The bureau has booked eight groups that, to date, San Antonio has been unable to accommodate because of convention facility limitations. Those groups represent approximately 112,000 future hotel room nights.

Once the convention center transformation project is completed, the facility will have approximately 515,000 sf of prime contiguous exhibit space. It will house more than 800,000 sf of new space, bringing the total facility footprint to more than 900,000 sf.

Inside the Numbers: San Antonio's hospitality industry

  •  Annual economic impact of San Antonio’s hospitality industry is $12 billion.
  •  Number of jobs that will be supported by expanded and improved Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center: 5,322.
