COLLEGE STATION - The Texas A&M Student Recreation Center is set to get its first major facelift since opening in 1995 — a $50 million renovation that will increase its space by 25 percent. The university is soliciting bids from companies who will work with San Antonio-based architect Marmon Monk to renovate the center.

The request calls for nearly 20,000 sf of renovated space, nearly 36,000 Elements path sf of natatorium renovation and more than 113,000 sf of new construction. The design is somewhat flexible and the final list of amenities will be determined by the winning bid.

The renovation will help meet the needs of the largest, ever-expanding student body in Texas.

When the approximately 300,000-sf recreation center opened in 1995, approximately 1.2 million check-ins were made by students to the center. That number has fluctuated anywhere between 100,000 more or less every year since then, meaning that the center has pretty much operated at capacity since day one while the number of students has grown.
