CORPUS CHRISTI – The local market added 3,800 new construction jobs in 2013 for a total of 28,700 jobs, or a 15 percent gain over 2012, according to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

The region, including the City of Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Kingsville, Alice and other towns, is the number 11 top market in the country by percentage for construction job growth.

Houston and Austin each added a greater volume of construction jobs in 2013, with growth rates at 2 percent and 6 percent respectively.

The AGC report included construction of all kinds — from road building to mining to logging — home building is likely where the region made its mark.

The number of permits issued for single-family homes in the Corpus Christi area, where the unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent in October 2013, has steadily risen in recent years, according to The Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University.

In all, 1,271 permits for single-family homes were issued from January 2013 to November 2013, compared with 1,273 in all of 2012, 884 in 2011 and 925 in 2010.

The upswing in construction is also proof the region is positioning itself for more economic growth as exploration of the Eagle Ford Shale ramps up, said Bart Braselton, executive vice president of Braselton Homes in Corpus Christi .

“Our proximity to a cheap and abundant energy source is creating interest from all over the state and all over the world,” said Braselton.
