SAN BENITO - The construction value of new commercial and residential building projects reached $16.7 million in 2013, according to city permit data.

In 2013 the city reported the following:

•  57 housing starts with a construction value of $4.8 million;
•  69 commercial construction projects with a value of $11.9 million; and
•  a $7.2 million, 100-unit apartment complex at 698 Stookey Rd.

New home construction shows the local housing market is rebounding, according to Pete Avila, a representative for D.R. Horton. The city issued the developer 31 construction permits for homes with average values of $138,000 in 2013.

“That’s a strong indication that the housing market and the economy is bouncing back,” said Avila. “We’re looking for a good strong year this year.”
