McALLEN, HILDALGO COUNTY - Hidalgo County Precinct 4, County Drainage District 1, McAllen and Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District (ECISD) will jointly fund a new road and bridge near the intersection of Rooth Rd. and Mile 17½ roads with North Ware Rd.

The project will connect three schools: Longoria Middle School, Flores-Zapata Elementary and IDEA Quest Academy and College Prep

The .4-mile piece of road will alleviate traffic problems and allow students commuting from the west to reach the schools by a more direct path than the current route that bypasses a canal just west of the campuses.

About 82 percent of the road is in McAllen, while 18 percent is under county jurisdiction, said Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios.

Funding for the project will include:

•  $500,000 from McAllen
•  $460,000 from ECISD
•  $280,000 from County Drainage District 1, and
•  $177,000 from Hidalgo County.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of March 2014.

Commissioners also approved more than $735,000 for six other road and drainage projects in Precinct 4.
