McALLEN – La Plaza Mall owner Simon Property Group announced Sears would be demolished. An 80,000-sf, two-story addition with 50 to 60 shops and four to eight restaurants is planned.

For the meantime, Sears will close “on or about” November 1, 2015, according to a letter from the company’s headquarters to the city.

The closure means 132 people — from managers to cashiers — will be out of jobs.

Simon Property Group acquired the property Sears was located on — along with stores across the country — in April as the former retail giant looked for ways to cut costs.
