AMARILLO - In January 2014, retail sales were up 5 percent from January 2013, slower than the year to date increase of 8 percent. New car sales are 11 percent higher and used car sales are up 39 percent.

There are more drilling rigs in the Panhandle as natural gas prices are up 20 percent. Drilling activity in the eastern Panhandle continues to be centered in expensive horizontal wells.
