PORTLAND, SAN PATRICIO COUNTY – It’s another fast growing community in the Coastal Bend area. Located on the other side of the Harbor Bridge lies one of the safest communities in the Coastal Bend — Portland.

There are three things to know about the City of Portland.

1.  With more than 7,000 single-family homes, Portland is a residential community for building families. There are approximately 450 home sites that are either being built, under development, or in the planning stages, according to City Manager Randy Wright.

Within the next 18-24 months the homes will be built out. An additional 500 to 600 homes are expected in the next three years. The city predicts a total land mass of about 2,400 additional homes, with room to grow.

2.  Portland is a place for families because of the low crime rate and 13 well-maintained parks that are available. Police Chief Gary Giles credits the low crime rate to its location and citizen involvement.

H-E-B, IHOP, Chili’s including the recently added Academy add up to lots of shopping.

3. The City of Portland is in the epicenter of industrial growth. Companies including Tianjin Pipe Company, Cheniere Energy and Voestalpine are employing hundreds. Although all are located outside of Portland, the overflow benefits the city.

The 1.4-mile extension of the La Quinta Ship Channel, located on the north side of Corpus Christi Bay, is playing a major role in attracting investment to the area. The completion of the dredging of the La Quinta Channel extension marks the beginning of more economic opportunity.

Over about a two- to three-year construction period, there will be approximately 3,000 construction jobs available in the area.
