North Waco pioneers Cameron Heights housing
WACO – The $6.4 million project known as Cameron Heights has completed the first 20 units of the 69-unit community. The "pocket neighborhood" is located at Fourth St. and Bosque Blvd. Six more units will be finished by the end of June.
The next block on the project is called the Cottages of Cameron Heights. Construction will begin in coming weeks on that section of 19 owner-occupied homes. On both blocks, the two-story homes are built nearly to the street but are clustered around a landscaped courtyard and have two-car garages.
Rents for the existing units range from $925 for a one-bedroom, 1.5-bath unit to $1,800 for a three-bedroom, 2.5-bath unit. The owner-occupied units would cost between $125,000 and $169,000.
The units are marketed for a variety of middle-income residents, including young professionals, graduate students and retirees who want to be close to downtown, Baylor University and Cameron Park.
The project — spread over two city blocks — is the first major development in decades for the neighborhood across Waco Dr. from downtown. The Cameron Heights block will be built out by May 2015 and initially be leased out.
