EDINBURG - Local sales taxes totaled over $2.1 million in December 2013, compared to almost $1.7 million in December 2012, representing a 26.55 percent increase, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

“The City of Edinburg is growing exponentially. New major retailers, such as the H-E-B to be built next to the Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley, and other stories and restaurants, are being announced on a regular basis,” said Mayor Richard García.

Edinburg far outpaced other key Valley communities in the rate of improvement, with only Pharr, which reported an almost 15 percent rate of growth, registering a double-digit increase for that key holiday season month.

All cities in Hidalgo County generated a combined total of $16,677,172 in local sales tax revenue in December 2013, compared to $15,680,551 in December 2012, an improvement of 6.35 percent.

All cities in Cameron County generated a combined total of $7,007,182 in local sales tax revenue in December 2013, compared to $6,548,118 in December 2012, an improvement of 7.01 percent.

State tax revenue from retail sales in December 2013 was $2.3 billion, up 8.3 percent compared to December 2012. “Sales tax revenue has increased for 46 consecutive months,” said Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.
