COPPERAS COVE - The $34.7 million, 3.5-mile SH 9 has opened. The bypass runs around the east side of Copperas Cove, connecting US Hwy. 190 and FM 116, which leads motorists to Gatesville heading north.

The highway, which broke ground in February 2011, stretches over Fort Hood land. It will help free up some of the congestion coming in and out of Fort Hood, according to Fort Hood Garrison Commander Col. Matt Elledge.

“SH 9 is just another example of what can happen when communities in the great state of Texas come together for the benefit of all,” Elledge said. “This project is definitely a benefit for our soldiers, our families, retirees and civilians who utilize the services out of Fort Hood.”

Judge John Firth, a member of the Coryell County Board, said this project wouldn’t have been possible without Fort Hood. By connecting communities, Firth said he foresees a boost of interest in economic development, proving beneficial and critical for years to come.
