COLLEGE STATION - The 300,000-sf Texas A&M Student Recreation Center will be getting a $54 million renovation. Groundbreaking will be March 24, 2014. The project includes 56,000 sf of renovated space and 113,000 sf of new construction.

Completion is set for December 2015. The renovation project will be the first major facelift for the building since it was built in 1995.

Recreation Center additions will include:

•  a personal training suite with an indoor turf area;
•  a gymnasium with two basketball courts;
•  activity rooms for group exercises;
•  a second entrance on the south side of the building;
•  an eight-lane, 25-meter indoor lap pool; and
•  an outdoor plaza on top of the expanded weight room.

Additionally, the natatorium will be gutted and will get $8 million worth of new mechanical equipment and cosmetic upgrades. The lighting in the building will be retrofitted to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

When the recreation center opened, there were about 1.2 million check-ins during the first year, said Dennis Corrington, executive director at the department of recreational sports. That number has fluctuated anywhere between 100,000 more or less every year since then.

The overhaul will be paid for with student fees, but they will not increase. Parts of the facility will be closed at different times during the renovations.
