MIDLAND - Midland’s 2.9 percent jobless rate made it the only MSA in the nation to post a jobless rate less than 3 percent in January 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Midland’s civilian labor force grew by 2,500 people from January 2013 to January 2014. Of the 95,600 people in the labor force, 2,800 were unemployed.

During a five-month stretch from December 2012 through April 2013, no community in America posted a lower jobless rate than Midland.

Odessa’s 3.6 percent unemployment rate during January 2013 put the area in a three-way tie with Iowa City, Iowa, and Fargo, North Dakota for fifth best in the nation.
