EL PASO – Wells Fargo’s Bassett branch, located at Geronimo Dr. and I-10 in East-Central El Paso, is the banking chain’s busiest branch in the world for teller transactions. Two other El Paso branches rank in the bank’s top ten for teller transactions.

The Bassett branch handles 45,000 to 50,000 teller transactions per month, including at drive-through banking tellers. The branches at 1530 N. Lee Trevino and 6960 N. Mesa handle 30,000 to 33,000 teller transactions per month.

The Bassett branch’s 13,000-sf lobby is about twice as large as Wells Fargo’s other El Paso branches, said Christine Gallegos, who oversees Wells Fargo’s 12 El Paso branches. The Bassett branch also has 58 employees compared to smaller branches with 20 or fewer employees.

"Our notable rankings are mainly due to the economy of El Paso, which is heavily cash based,” said Brett Welcher, Wells Fargo’s border-area spokesman.

Financial institutions along the U.S.-Mexico border tend to see a heavy use of branches, according to John Heasley, executive vice president and general counsel of the Texas Bankers Association. Part of that is tied to Mexican nationals banking in the United States to avoid peso devaluations.

Wells Fargo has 9,000 branches worldwide, including 6,173 in the United States.
