BROWNSVILLE-HARLINGEN - The mayors of Brownsville, Harlingen and Matamoros have signed an agreement to establish a bi-national economic development (Bi-NED) zone.

The economic development zone will create an advanced manufacturing zone along the border in order to capture a piece of the advanced manufacturing surge occurring in Mexico’s interior, especially in the electronics and automotive industries.

The agreement also provided the framework for the creation of an advisory board dedicated to advancing the Bi-NED initiative. Representatives from Brownsville, Harlingen and Matamoros will sit on the board.

United Brownsville is representing the Brownsville contingent, which includes Texas Southmost College, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board and the Port of Brownsville.

The Matamoros maquiladora industry alone has annual sales of $8 billion, though parts made elsewhere account for as much as $6.4 billion of that value, said Mike Gonzalez, president of United Brownsville.
