AMARILLO - Construction activity in Amarillo during first quarter 2014 increased greatly over the same period a year ago. Much of the increased construction can be attributed to the hailstorms that have hit the area in the last two years.

Roofing activity accounted for seven in ten building permits issued in 1Q 2014 and a 60 percent increase in construction spending.

Property owners in Amarillo poured $177.3 million into roof work alone in 2013, and they began 2014 spending another $37.2 million on roofs, according to the City of Amarillo.

Businesses poured $50.7 million into new buildings in 1Q 2014, a 71 percent increase from the same period a year ago.
