FORT WORTH - Less than a year after opening, Motorola has announced that it will close its 480,000-sf manufacturing facility by the end of 2014. The plant, which is located at 5650 Alliance Gateway, began producing Moto X smart phones in August 2013.

Motorola cited weak sales and high costs for shutting the plant, which employed as many as 3,800 employees at its peak. Today, the factory has 700 workers who assemble Motorola’s customizable Moto X smartphones.

With poor sales, Motorola was unable to achieve economies of scale, while costs for labor and shipping parts were higher compared with overseas operations, according to Mark Randall, Motorola’s senior vice president for supply chain and operations.

Motorola sold 900,000 Moto X phones in first quarter 2014. In contrast, Apple sold 25.9 million units of iPhone 5s in the same period.
